I've never had a problem playing golf with any Rolex, but my new GMT II with the 3186 inside is now my default golf watch thanks to the new more shock resistant Parachrom Bleu hairspring.

DSSD Thickness vs Panerai - WATCH TALK FORUMS - Re

DefaultDSSD Thickness vs Panerai
Does anyone have pictures or know off the top of their head what the thickness difference between the DSSD and a Panerai (104, 88) is?
I tried on the DSSD and didn't like it and I don't have an oppurtunity to see or try a Panerai since there are no PAM AD's in my province so I'm relying on pictures and others experiences. I have a Omega PO Chrono at 45.5mm and that fits my 7.25" wrists just fine and dandy but the DSSD looked really off so would a Panerai be the same?

Looking for a new watch and I have an LV and SD already so I'm looking at Panerai or a GMT IIc or EXPII (I wish they would make it bigger).

Let me know

DSSD some comparisons and scattered thoughts.. - W

DefaultDSSD some comparisons and scattered thoughts..
I purchased mine, last week..

Pre conceived notions.. It its going to be the largest watch that Rolex makes but their new GMT was a hit and I have been wearing 43mm breitling and pams in the past and they wore well, so I would like to see it in person.

My first impression... Its bigger that I expected..Normal packaging of Rolex with a nice new DSSD booklet which was helpful when figuring out the bracelet.

Comparison..

Comparing it to a Daytona (new style) its certainly larger.. specially in profile.

I think that its best to compare it to something similar in size.. A 44 mm panerai 233...

But the pictures do not do it justice..So its time to wear it and see what happens..

Its all in the wear and when you put it on, it does not just feel as comfortable as a big Breitling or Panerai. Its heavy but the case fits so tall on the wrist that it moves as your arm moves and makes you aware that you are wearing a big watch..

To summarize.

Thing that I like.
Dial, The semi matt dial is very nice looking. Easy to read the time and date.
Crystal, almost domed, pretty cool.
Bezel. The new bezel is certainly a nice improvement.
Bracelet is a big improvement and possibly will be the future of rolex.

Things that I dislike.
Size and Weight.. Too much and stuck too tall on the writs..Hard to forget that you are wearing a watch.
Writing within the inner bezel..Just stupid and meaningless.
Price. At $8975 USD its a new benchmark for a steel watch for Rolex.

Verdict
Not a hit my book like the new gmtIIc which I wore for about 6 months..

Dipsy impressions - WATCH TALK FORUMS - Best Watch

DefaultDipsy impressions
I know this may have been discussed extensively, but it is new news for me!
Well my local AD called me today to let me know they got their first 2 Deepseas this weekend and that I should swing on by to try on one of these new "fantastic and very fashionable" (direct quote) watches. I've had my share of different rolex pieces in the past and this one blew me away. Setting aside the fact that the watch is superbly executed (external bracelet/case fit and finish wise), and the fact that it can go almost 4km down into the ocean water, I must say, I am quite un-impressed. Not because it fails at excelling at what its intended to do, but because I felt it to be very disproportionate and clunky. A tiny dial on a gigantic watch that towers from my wrist as if I were wearing a Chopard tire gauge on my wrist. It also felt suspiciously light when compared side by side to my Ingenieur ( it may have been just an impression though). Finaly, can anyone read the dial by looking through the light mirror they put on and called a domed crystal? No AR for such a distorting dome of sapphire? I know it's necessary for the WR but the crystal kind of reminded me of those huge Breitling knockoffs with domed mineral crystals that distort the dial when you turn the watch a bit.
All is not bad though, the bezel (like the gmtIIc) is absolutely stunning. Congratulations on a fabulous new bezel design, and the ratchet on the Dipsy is very precise and pleasing to turn as well. Also, I love the blue maxi dial lume!
Unfortunately, to me at least, this watch left me with a weird feeling that something had gone afoul in the design labs at Rolex.

Kind regards,
Fred Bonatto

Daytona owners Let's hear the story of when you fi

DefaultDaytona owners: Let's hear the story of when you first "got the call">>>>>
For many Rolex enthusiasts, the day they got the call from their AD letting them know that a brand new stainless steel Daytona had been shipped to their store is a day they never forget. Here's my story:

Back I first got the call from my AD back in December of 2004 - it was a week or two before Christmas as I recall. I was in my office and it was still well before noon - I hadn't been in the office terribly long. My cell phone went off, and I didn't recognize the phone number.

"This is John."

"Hi John - this is Osterman's in the Dayton mall. We wanted to let you know we have just received a Rolex Daytona in stainless steel, and you're on our waiting list to receive one." We have several customers on our waiting list but the first one to our store will the one who gets it."

"I'm on my way - I'll be there in 5 minutes."

This was it. The momement of truth. I had this moment planned out in my mind and well rehursed. Much like you plan for your drive to the hospital when your wife goes into labor. I grabbed my coat and ran out of my office. As I passed my secretary's desk, I said (not stopping) "it's an emergency - I'll call you from the car." I jumped in the car and screamed out of the office parking lot. Now my then-office was only a couple of miles from the Dayton Mall, but there are a seemingly unending flow of stop lights between my office and the Mall. But the Lord was with me that day - I think I hit every light green on the way to the mall.

The mall hadn't been opened long, so I was able to snag a good parking spot close to the entrance nearest to Osterman's. I ran through the parking lot - by the time I was in the mall I was in a full-out sprint. The theme music to "Chariots of Fire" was playing in my head. I was passing the early morning "mall walkers" like they were standing still. Osterman's store front came into view - the sight of it spured me on further. I crossed the threshold of their doorway. Completely out of breath I gasped, "I'm John Holbrook <pant, pant>....I'm here for the Daytona...<pant>....did I make it?!?!"

To this day, I hold the Dayton Mall Osterman's record for the lowest response time for a Daytona call - 8 minutes from the time they hung up the phone to the time I made it inside the store.

It was worth it.

I was in complete shock, never having been in "the right place at the right time" like that before. Went back to the hotel to have the conversation... You know how it goes, "you won't believe what they have in the display cabinet...".

Ran back with my AMEX card and bought it right there and then.

Greetings to all,

Ok so some pretty deep conversations with... Ok let's just say some folks who have intrest in the Rolex that the Revolutionary was wearing . Has anyone ever heard anything about his belongings after his death which took place in 1967? Maybe Sotherbys or another auction house has sold them, or maybe they are treasures that could be found?

Thanks in advance.
Respectfully,

Greeneyes

Those Cuban cigars ARE 1/2 the price.

Only the USA suffers the outrageous prices, because they are "forbidden fruit". When you 'smuggle' them in via on-line retailers, the prices I have seen are easily double what I typically pay for the same cigars (and then there is the shipping on top..)

When you buy them overseas, they are quite a bargain, and in some cases less expensive than the DR offerings within the USA...

Also, legal Cubans within the USA (Pre-ban cigars) are VERY pricey- several hundred dollars a cigar in most cases (in the event this is what you were referring to). They are totally worth it, if they have been properly cared for, and complete rubbish if they were not properly cared for. I won't spend that money myself, but A friend was given one as a gift and he has professed to the quality on several occasions. That cigar was from 1965 or so; in any case, older than either he or I!

I also agree that any smoke can benefit from careful aging, just like a fine wine or scotch often does...
