Another month has gone by and the watchlist is ready to be renewed. These auctions cover the time period of April 14 - May 20. The funky watch pictured above is a Ettore Sottsass design Seiko. Sottsass was a very famous Italian modern designer. Like the Guigario Seikos, the Sottsass designs also command large prices. This example went for 53,500 yen.

This is a nice early Laurel Alpinist. Price was just a little too high as it did not get an opening bid of 50,000 yen.

Well, it was only a matter of time before we saw a 6319 Seiko diver on Yahoo! Japan. Seiko never made a 6319 diver, but at some point, a faker made up a batch. We’ve seen a few pop up in Europe. Of interest on this example is that it has a different dial than the usual 6319 fakes that are normally seen. This one did surprisingly receive one bid after its second listing and sold for 11,000 yen. Check out that caseback!

I appreciated the nice clean look and condition of this 5740 Lord Marvel. 18,500 yen.

I thought this (probably) custom King Seiko 4520 was very interesting. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a “hammered” watch case before. Nice custom caseback too. No bids at the opening price of 90,000 yen.

This is a rarely seen Orient Flash. The bezel actually lights up to aid in low light veiwing. Eat your heart out Casio with your EL technology! As expected, there was a lot of action on this auction. Selling price was 67,000 yen.

These gold Grand Seiko special editions are stunning watches with stunning prices. 501,000 yen.

Here is a fun one. This is a motorized display winder for Grand Seiko Springdrive models. Check out the mirror which allows you to view the movement in action! This novelty item sold for 12,500 yen.

This is just a typical example of one of the dozens of models released under the “Silverwave” brand, many of which are quite interesting. There have probably been more diverse styles released using this name than any watch in Seiko’s history. 16,000 yen.

I’ve never really understood the appeal of our next watch. It’s a Seiko Airpro. The concept was that the band was adjustable in that you could pump air into it to customize the fit by pressing on that black button. These Airpros were released maybe 10 years ago in what seems like dozens of styles. This one would be right at home in a Star Wars movie. They never have really caught on with collectors. 8,250 yen.

The “AutoQuartz” listed on the dial of this very early kinetic diver makes this one just a little more collectible. Sometimes these are called Starfish Divers. Price was 22,500 yen.

Neat pendant watch. 7,750 yen.

I suspect that this Honda dive watch is Seiko based. It’s got a nice tidy design with a definite Seiko vibe to it. Price was 39,900 yen.

This next auction was a surprise. It’s a 6159 diver in mediocre shape with the wrong hands installed. The surprise was the price. It was bid up to over $2,400.00. I would imagine it is next to impossible to find the correct hands for it.

How cool is this? This Casio DW-6100 has been retro-fitted with some kind of transmitting or receiving device. I think it’s legitimate. It was advertised as a spy watch, and its working status was unknown. It sold for $102.50.

I don’t quite understand the allure of these AGS divers. I think because they have a shroud, the collectors like to buy them, but to me, they are more like novelties. The build quality is not up to Prospex standards, and if you like esoteric kinetic divers, there are much more interesting alternatives like for instance, the Autoquartz pictured above. The seller should be thrilled with the $510.00 final price of this one!

Let’s start this post out with my favorite watch of the bunch. This is a stunning Silver Wave Seiko. This one received a fair amount of interest and sold for $170.00.

Here’s a 7K52 Scubamaster. I like these watches a lot. This one did not meet reserve and was bid up to $405.00.

I wish I knew more about this one. It’s just a Casio Sport watch, but it received a lot of hits and interest. Selling price was $227.50. Pretty neat.

This is a G-Shock Muscle Time clock. Lately these have been selling for up to and over $200.00. This one slipped through the radar and sold for $52.49.

This is an exceptionally clean 7016. Buyer got a bargain in my opinion. Price was $151.00.

These 600M Quartz divers have jumped up in price lately. Until recently, they seemed to be selling in the $600.00–$700.00 range. Lately I’ve seen them go for more. This one sold for $1,025.00.

Here’s Citizen’s counterpart to the Seiko pictured above. Although harder to find, its price was much lower at $406.00. I’ve had one of these before. Fun watch.

I don’t see these too often, and no, I don’t know what that thing on the side is! This Seiko Fieldmaster sold for $201.50.

This is a very cool 7A28 chronograph that garnered a little over $400.00. The watch rotates within the bracelet to allow adjusting to the wearer’s taste.

The orange bezel on this S800 Seiko dive computer makes this one rare. It sold for probably double what a normal one usually gets. Price was $482.00.

This is an unusual Citizen chronograph. It went unsold at $275.00.

Be still my beating heart. I’ve always wanted a Seiko Electric and this is the one I’ve been looking for. I forgot to bid. Bummer. Price was only about $50.00 too. Oh well.

Here’s a Casio Snakekiller which was recently discussed on GMT+9. Selling price was about $350.00.

Casio G-Shocks come in a dizzying array of styles and colors. One of the fun things about being a G-Shock fan is separating the bombs from the duds. G-Shock model AW-582C-4AJF is hot. It’s a member of the Fire Package ‘07 squad. Casio Japan releases several G-Shocks in this series each year. This one’s made my T-Mobile Fav 5, and my MySpace Top 7.

I first recall seeing Fire Package G-Shocks in a department store in Japan in a Casio poster that featured American fire fighters. I believe that was in 2003. I’ve never found a good explanation of what “Fire Package” means. It may refer to the fire engine red highlights these have. I originally thought the release was to honor NYC fire fighters following their heroics on 9/11.

G-Shock AW-582C-4AJF came out in February. Its suggested retail price is 12,600 JPY, but goes for around $75 US in Japan. It has the standard G-Shock features — 200m water resistant, a three-year battery, 12/24 hour time option, stopwatch, countdown timer, 5 alarms, LED backlight. It also has a 27 city world time feature.

WUS G-Shock Forum founder, Sjors, recently wrote that Casio plans in future to only make G-Shocks that are Tough Solar (solar powered) and Wave Ceptor (ones that sync with atomic clock radio signals for to-the-second accuracy). In a way, I think that would be a shame. I have a warm spot for “low tech” G-Shocks like AW-582C. They need neither sun nor radio waves to function as designed. And the price is right.

Although famously tough, several things make or break a G-Shock design. One is size. Too big and they’re awkward to wear. Too small and the whole point is lost. AW-582C is based on one of the original G-Shocks, AW-500-1E (1989), so the size and shape, and hence the balance on the wrist, should be good.

Another thing that can cause a G-Shock to go down in flames is its color. It’s hard to go wrong with the default color combination of black, red, and white. Many original G-Shocks from the 1980s, including AW-500-1E (pictured below), were black with red and white highlights.

Display visibility is also a life or death issue. With an analog G-Shock that means being able to clearly see the hands. The hands on AW-582C-4AJF (below, right) are the same as used on GW-1000DJ-1JF from 2003 (below, left). On GW-1000 they can be hard to read against the light-gray LCD windows and shiny purple solar panel dial. In contrast, look how easy they are to see on the AW-582.

Some are selling the AW-582 with a handy zippered carrying case as a bonus. I love this kind of little goody, which can’t be purchased separately and which Casio considers a “gift” to fans. The zipper is plastic, so it won’t scratch the watch. Its tang is made out of rubber with raised letters spelling out G-Shock.

It’s always interesting to see new releases from Casio Japan. Many fall short, for one reason or another, but a few climb to the top of the ladder. Model AW-582C-4AJF makes the grade. It’ll come and go quickly, and will never be a valued collector’s item selling for big money. But it’s a nice design and one of the G-Shocks to spark my interest this spring. Several Japanese vendors are currently offering this watch on Yahoo! Japan Auctions, and it may show up on eBay in the near future. It’s unlikely to be available after a few months, however, so those interested should probably smoke one out soon. (Click here for link.)
